Is it safe to store keys in a locker?

In a city as dynamic and touristy as Seville, lockers have become a popular solution for storing personal belongings, from backpacks to electronic devices. But a common question that arises is: is it safe to store keys in a locker? And no, we're not talking about the locker key itself, but the keys to suitcases, rented flats or private homes.

Why keep your keys in a locker?

Before talking about security, it is important to understand why many people choose to keep their keys in a locker:

  • Comfort: Whether you're exploring the city, playing sports or attending an event, it's not practical to carry your keys with you at all times. A locker allows you to free yourself from the worry of losing them or accidentally dropping them.
  • Protection: Instead of leaving keys in a less secure place, such as a jacket pocket or handbag, a locker provides an additional barrier against theft or misplacement.

Security factors in lockers

Modern locking systems: Most modern lockers are equipped with electronic locking systems, such as code numbers or electronic locks, which offer a much higher level of security than traditional locking systems. This reduces the risk of unauthorised access to your locker.

Strong materials: Lockers are designed with durable materials, such as reinforced steel, which make them very difficult to break or tamper with. In addition, locker and locker suppliers usually maintain their facilities under strict security standards and regular inspections to ensure they are in good condition.

Surveillance and location: Lockers are often located in high-traffic or well-guarded areas, such as train stations, shopping centres or gyms, where security cameras and staff are available. This adds an additional layer of protection for your belongings.

Tips for securely storing keys in a locker

Even though lockers provide a high level of security, it is always a good idea to take some precautions:

  • Use a reliable locker: Opt for lockers in reputable places with good security practices.
  • Avoid storing highly sensitive keys: If possible, avoid storing keys that give access to high-value or highly sensitive locations.
  • Do not disclose the locker code: Keep the code or key to the locker secret to avoid unauthorized access.
  • Check the locker regularly: Ensure that the locker is working properly and that there are no signs of tampering.

New regulations for tourist dwellings in Andalusia: Decree 31/2024

This decree aims to regulate the growing tourist rental sector, establishing clear rules on habitability and the minimum requirements to be met by these accommodations. Among the new provisions, tourist flats are required to have a minimum surface area of 14 square metres per place, and may never have less than 25 square metres in total.

One of the most important points of the decree is the prohibition of using street furniture on public roads to install security boxes or padlocks for the delivery of keys. In the event that the accommodation manager cannot personally receive guests, these delivery systems must be located in private areas or inside the building itself, always respecting the urban environment. This measure aims to prevent public spaces from becoming unregulated access points, thus protecting street furniture and aesthetics.

In addition to regulating the handing over of keys, the decree also establishes other important conditions such as the obligatory registration of tourist dwellings in the registry of the Regional Ministry of Tourism. It also specifies that dwellings may not have access restrictions based on race, religion or sex, and that they must be sufficiently furnished, equipped with electrical appliances, and have air conditioning in the summer months. With these new regulations, the Andalusian government seeks to guarantee the quality of the tourist service, protecting both users and the urban environment.
